What is Attrition?

Attrition is a game focused around the French and German battle of Ypres (1914) made for our end of year college assignment. The game features a PVP playstyle with amazing visuals and decent performance.

Attrition was built from the ground up between myself and a friend from college. Both of us specialised in our own fields, me art & design and him with programming. This workflow allowed us to better work as a team whilst doing the parts we enjoy and avoiding the parts we didnt.

In the end, Attrition earned us both top grades in the class with several destinction level elements.

Animation

Below is a selection of images and videos showing how we created animations for our game. Because we wanted to create everything ourselves, we faced many challenges. Our biggest one was animation. Neither me or my partner had any experience animating, however i had the equipment to create a minature MOCAP rig using VR equipment.

The process

Using a lot of vr equipment and specific softwares, me and my partner managed to create an awsome mocap rig which allowed us to create original, human like animations for Attrition.

To work this magic, i used my own Vive trackers and VR headset for the motion tracking, whilst using the MOCAP Fusion Steam application. This app allowed me to record motions made by the trackers and headset and export them blender files. This method was worked upon many times because of tech issues. Luckily, me and my partner planned ahead for this and started aniamtion early. We knew it would be our biggest hurdle, so getting it done was a priority.

Everything used is listed here:

Vive Ultimate trackers x3

Meta Quest 2 VR Headset

Capable PC supplied by college

MOCAP FUSION

Blender

Virtual Desktop

A LOT of patience

Whilst this method did mess ur around a lot and cause lots of stress + issues, the overall payout was beyond anything we expected.
